You read that right yo! My very own cover and for my favorite series from Zenescope AND not a moment too soon either considering it is the final chapter of Wonderland.
Considering this was my first solo venture I was extremely excited but amazingly calm and confident. I felt right at home here, normally when I get a cover to work on, it is already drawn, so I have this moment of “okay what is everything?” as I lift the lineart and start laying in flats the image becomes clearer and I get in the head of the individual that drew it. With this image I had no such worries, I knew what everything was because I drew it and when I draw I always think in colors so I already have a game plan before a single pixel of color goes down.
The concept for this cover was actually fairly simple, draw Wonderland’s star Calie wearing only the Mad Hatter’s coat and Hat with a side note of “like something you’d seen in a magazine”. Then it was up to me to make it interesting, because as we all know most magazine shoots are quite static and nearly every magazine poses the girls the same way. So one of my concepts took the idea of a Photo-shoot a step further and went behind the scenes. Putting the viewer behind the camera. I also knew the Mad Hatter is obviously a male character so a Man's coat on a Female is generally baggy due to the style of cut, this gave me the chance to do some fun things with Calie wrapping it around herself in a pretty teasing fashion. In the end Zenescope really liked it, I’m really proud of it and now I hope some of you can dig it as well.
I also want to take a moment and give thanks to Nei Ruffino, Mike Debalfo and a good buddy Jason Clark for giving me some input on my early concepts!
