Cover A for Grimm Fairy Tales #51 published by Zenescope Entertainment.
Drawn and Colored by: Corey Knaebel <-- Thats me yo!
Concept: The initial concept given to me by the editor changed from the final product a bit as I bounced my interpretations of the concept back and forth. In the beginning Sela was standing over the Nutcracker prince who lies in peace on a slate or in a crystal coffin.
I wasnt sure how to fully illustrate a crystal coffin and make it look cool and not like an icy coffin as if he was some suspended-in-animation cave man. After doodling some mindless scratch marks in Photoshop I finally had an overall vision that I knew I had execute in some manner; the stained glass and statues. Once that fell into the place I fought with the PrinceI mean the dude is dead and there is only so much you can do with a laying down character and the image can quickly become static like a few of my concepts were. But this positioning you see here was the most interesting and with Sela sitting on the edge of the slate seemed to bring it together.
The hardest part of the image was actually drawing Sela smelling the rose, you wouldnt think itd be that hard but after 7 or so tries that all turned out like she was getting ready to sing into the rose I finally came up with this and it fell right into place! So the lesson to learnI was trying to force the drawing to become something instead of letting the drawing become what it wanted to be.
I actually just read the entire Grimm Fairy Tales run up to date and this was by far my favorite cover. I love the artistic style and I love the fact that there is emotion displayed while still bringing the sex appeal that Zenescope covers are known for. If you're going to be at Wizard World Chicago this summer, I'll definitely have to visit your booth for some prints. I especially love the Black Cat Punk print you have here.
I'll definitely be in artist alley. I always update my journal with table info and will have various prints for your browsing pleasure. Be sure to bring your comics that I've worked on as I'll be happy to sign them.
I'll have a lot of goodies at C2e2, prints, left over comics from BDI and Zenescope, raffleing off a marker render as well as trying to get my sketch book done to debut there! SO I hope that tickles your fancy
Love the composition, love all the details, really love the piece in general. I love the clothing, and quite frankly, i love the breasts, they actually seem to have weight to them. i keep staring at that hand on his chest, you really worked it with her hand, it looks so life-like.
now two things. one, the tear looks very unreal, like it's a white string dropping from her eye. Maybe you had intended for it to be more cartoon-like, but i would suggest studying like water or something to get the shading right, because the more life-like a tear looks, well, let's just say it can add a lot to the composition.
the other thing is his face. i can't quite put my finger on what's bothering me, but my only real guess is it looks undershaded and odd in comparison to the high, lovely contrasts in the rest of the piece. but overall, i'd say you did a fantastic job, i'm envious of your backgrounds especially the the textures on the shiny clothes.
